Link: Crackdown leads to drop in illegal immigration

OK, all I have to say is yippee! They try to make things sound so terrible. But as I read the article I keep thinking, IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Now we have to adjust, this is the place we need to get our lazy teenagers off of the Nintendo Wii's and ipod's and get them out in the fields picking produce! School is out or just about out, lets show them what hard work is about. I spent my 2 and 1/2 years in food service, doing the dirty crummy low paid work! So can our kids!

That's my 2 cents....

  1. John, you're taking the simplistic approach - take a course in Economics and get back to us.

  2. OK, "Informed" please explain your enlightened view to me. I'm pretty sure I can counter your argument.

    You have the floor...

  3. Also, I turned off anonymous comments, you have to own what you state now.

    Thanks.

  5. Sorry John I posted that, I decided to bust your chops and improve my self-image by leaving a cryptic and non-specific insult of your educational deficiencies. (Heavy Sarcasm) Though to be honest I’m not real sure why you would need to take an economics class in order to be qualified to have an opinion. Come to think of it many of the founding fathers of this country had less education then you, and still managed to do a rather good job setting things up for us. Oh well.

  6. Ah, so informed is named! Ok Will, let's have a debate my friend. Your Masters VS my "wisdom" hehe. Please explain your point, I really would like to counter it.

  7. Sorry John I was just joking about the original post being me. I keep forgetting Sarcasm does not translate well into a written medium. ;) If you would like to exercise your debate skills I suppose I could get studied up on the issue, and play devils advocate. It would be difficult however, as I find myself agreeing with your general opinion about the immigration thing. Anyways sorry for the confusion.

  9. I'm against illegal immigration as much as you are, but there is something that you are missing here:

your 2.5 years in food service makes you incredibly rich compared to picking produce. In terms of job markets you are comparing apples to oranges. The illegal immigrants are getting illegal wages as well, wages that no teenager would agree to when they could exert less energy flipping burgers.

2 years in Idaho was a great education on how illegal immigration worked. Farmers need the help, they can't afford the help, so when help is offered at half the cost of minimum wage, they go for it (and personally I can't blame them there at all.. farming these days downright sucks). Not to mention that most of the immigrants will work 200% harder than today's teenager, with little complaining. I got to know many of them. They were thrilled with half of minumum wage. You give an American teenager that salary and put him in a field moving pipe for an exhausting 10 hours a day, well, I just don't see it.

Besides, it goes back to the original point I want to make: if food service is the "dirty crummy low paid work" of our society at minimum wage, then field work at half of that will never stand a chance.

Solution? Well, farmers could pay better wages and pull in legal workers, but their costs would go up. If one farmer does this he goes out of business because his prices can't compete. It has to be a mass movement. Just doesn't happen like that.
